The Singer Schools Under 20 Rugby League began in March with Isipathana College, Colombo – the 2014 unbeaten triple champions – coming out under No. 8 Omalka Gunaratna’s leadership to defend their crowns.
Though they lost one title earlier this year, the All Island 7s Championship to St Peter’s College, they meant business from the time the League Tournament kicked off and remained unbeaten and finished on top in Group A when the Round 1 matches came to an end. In similar fashion, Royal College also ended their campaign unbeaten and ended on top of Group B with bragging rights for the Bradby Shield. In total, 10 teams, those who were placed as the best from 2014 season, competed in the segment 1 under Group A and B, while the rest (10
teams) competed in segment 2.
After the first round, based on their performances, teams are divided into Cup, Plate and Bowl Championships for Round 2 of the Singer League 2015. We would love to feature all teams, but due to lack of space and also based on our audience demand, we picked seven teams across the league for this edition’s Schools Rugby Review. The other teams will be featured in our ensuing reviews. Let’s look at how the boys and their teams from the “Quadrangle” fared in Round 1.
Who will go for glory, who will survive the battles, who will get promoted and who will eat humble pie?
