I’ll admit that finding Suriya Resort was quite tough, so after driving up and down the town of Waikkal with Nandika, I finally decided to pull out my phone and use Google Maps to find the place. With much ease, and thanking
technology, we managed to find the hotel in under five minutes. I’d say the
wait was absolutely worth it.
A unique feature of Suriya Resort is that it is built on 11 acres nestled between the stretch of pristine beach and the serene Gin Oya River surrounding the premises. Coconut trees and mangroves surround the area as well, and you are sure to spot different species of birds. Suriya Resort promises each guest a comfortable stay, complete with utterly delectable cuisine, excellent service and relaxation, away from the hustle and bustle of Colombo.
Comfort and privacy is key when staying at Suriya Resort
The hotel comprises 56 guestrooms, out of which 14 are Deluxe Suites, and 42 are Deluxe Rooms, all of which come equipped with a private balcony, thus allowing guests a stellar view of the Indian Ocean and its glorious sunsets come evening. Additionally, six water chalets are the newest feature at Suriya Resort, which are equipped with a private Jacuzzi and outdoor shower area apart from an in-room bathroom. To ensure you sleep well and fitfully, all the rooms offer beds with high-quality bed linen and comfortable, soft mattresses along with fluffy pillows – perfect for just sinking into with a book propped on your lap, or taking a long
nap. Each room provides a spacious wardrobe, in addition to television facilities, while the bathroom features a high-pressure rain shower. Bathrooms also provide shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, toothbrushes and toothpaste, shower caps and soap, and a hairdryer.
Indulging in excellent cuisine
As far as hotel buffets go, I rarely hold out much hope only because it’s not often that the dishes on offer are actually prepared to perfection, so I was pleasantly surprised to find that Suriya Resort takes its food very seriously. The lunch and dinner buffets usually consist of light appetisers, mostly salads and seafood, while mains range from steamed and egg rice and a pasta station to deep fried stuffed chicken wings in hot garlic sauce, grilled pork chops with pepper sauce, grilled modha fish in a Hollandaise sauce, a red mutton curry with green peas, chilli crab, parsley potatoes, mushroom fritters and mixed vegetables. The menu changes daily.
A separate section serves Sri Lankan fare, complete with assorted pickles and sambols, should you wish to tuck into local favourites. The dessert spread is impressive and features cheesecake, a host of cakes, freshly whipped mousses, and mini pastries along with freshly cut fruit.
Relax by the main bar just before dinner and sip on a cocktail or two, or choose a beverage or snack of your choice from the extensive menu.
Relaxing and Recreation
Don’t forget to take a good, long dip in the pool, or even take a break in-between swims and lounge on one of the daybeds, while reading or sipping on a drink. Watch the sunset while taking an evening stroll on the beach, which is right next to the hotel. A well-equipped gymnasium is located amidst a natural surrounding, providing you with peace and privacy while you work out.
Negombo is just a few kilometres away, and is home to various restaurants and
cafés, in addition to shops selling an interesting range of items for tourists.
