Saints to gather for the 53rd Year, at Bambalapitiya!

53rd Saints Quadrangular Tournament is to be held on 26th & 27th November 2022 at St. Peter’s College Sports Complex at Bambalapitiya after a lapse of two years owing to Covid 19 pandemic. This year’s event is being hosted by Old Peterite Sports Club in celebrating the Centenary Year of St. Peter’s College and organised by the Saints Quadrangular Association. The Saints Quadrangular Association is formed under the patronage of St. Anthony’s College OBA Colombo Branch (SACK OBA –Colombo), Old Bens Sports Club (PBSC), Old Joes Sports Club (OJSC) and St. Peter’s College OBU which is being represented by Old Peterite Sports Club (OPSC).

The Annual gathering of the Old Boys of the premier Catholic Schools in Sri Lanka was held last on 03rd November 2019 at St. Joseph’s College when it was hosted by Old Joes Sports Club. It was initially to be held during the month of July 2019 and was cancelled by the Saints Quadrangular Association aftermath Easter Sunday attack. However in keeping with tradition and to ensure the continuation of this long-held tournament, the organizer’s hosted a T 20 Tournament among the alumni of the fur schools instead of the traditional Main Tournament which consists of a Main 50 over Cricket tournament, Over 40 (age) Cricket tournament, Basketball and Rugby 07’s tournament, all held across two days followed by a social. The 2019 T 20 Tournament was won by Old Joes led by Sri Lanka Test Captain Dimuth Karunaratne after beating Old Peterites in the finals at Darley Road.

The Old Joes Sports Club was to host the Tournament once again in celebrating the 125th Anniversary of St. Joseph’s College in 2020 but due to the outbreak of Covid 19 the tournament was not held in 2020 and 2021. When the full tournament was held last in its grandeur, in 2018, Old Peterites Sports Club won the Overall Championship while Old Joes Sports Club won the Main Cricket Tournament.

This year, the organizers have taken steps to have a fully-fledged tournament with the introduction of T 10 Cricket Tournament for both categories, the Main Tournament and for the over 40 age category tournament between Old Benedictines, Old Antonians, Old Josephians and Old Peterites. A galaxy of former Schools and National Cricketers and present Sri Lanka Cricketers are expected to take the field during the weekend of 26th & 27th November barring any weather disruptions. All matches will be played at St. Peter’s College grounds thus giving an opportunity for spectators to enjoy exciting cricket whilst seeing their former school cricketers in action once again.

At the same venue, Basketball and Rugby 07’s tournament will be held adding more choices and excitement and creating a sporting carnival at Bambalapitiya. Furthermore, an evening of fellowship and a social will be held for the Saints to relive their glory days on Saturday 26th at St. Peter’s College.

This is the flagship event of the Old Boys of St. Anthony’s College Kandy, St. Benedict’s College Colombo 13, St. Joseph’s College Colombo 10 and St. Peter’s College Colombo 4. Old Boys from these schools come together once a year not only in Sri Lanka but also in Australia, England and in Canada as a tradition to celebrate their camaraderie and fellowship whilst reliving their glory years.

The Annual Saints quadrangular tournament was the brainchild of the Old Benedictines for the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of their OBU in 1963. Various schools were invited to this inaugural tournament, but coincidently only three schools responded namely St. Anthony’s College, St. Joseph’s College, and St. Peter’s College. Old Antonian, late Ranjith Samarasekera was the mainstay of the Saints Quadrangular until his sad demise in 2017. He galvanized the OBUs subsequent to the inaugural event and made this into an annual event that surpassed all expectations. He has been present in every organizing committee up until the tournament of 2016. A trophy in his memory is on offer since 2017 for the overall winner. Organizers would like to invite alumni of four schools and Cricket lovers to be there on 26th & 27th of November to witness the action at Bambalapitiya.

Here’s wishing all the best to the four teams and to further strengthen their Saint’s brotherhood!
