Who can throw the knockout punch?

2018 Schools Rugby Knockout Tournament

Under 19 Schools Rugby Knockouts tournament is set to begin during this weekend after the completion of a gruelling 2018 Schools Rugby League where Royal College Colombo under the Captaincy of Sabith Feroze successfully defended their A Division League Championship title for the 2nd successive year running, being unbeaten and winning all their traditional silverware. St. Joseph’s College Colombo 10 ended as runners-up after losing only to Royal College earlier in the League and St. Peter’s College ended at the 3rd place after losing to both Royalists and Josephians. Meanwhile, S. Thomas’ College Mt. Lavinia who failed to make an impact in the 1st round faced the danger of relegation along with St. Anthony’s College Kandy managed to put up a better show in the 2nd round where they secured the Plate Championship ahead of the Antonians. Both teams secured their places in the Group for 2019 edition. From this year’s Division 01 League tournament organized by Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Association, D.S. Senanayake College and Dharmaraja College Kandy will be demoted to B Group from A Group for next year’s tournament while Science College and Maliyadeva College Kurunegala managed to gain promotions from B Group to A Group.

As per the 2018 Schools Knockout Tournament, top six teams from the A Group Cup Championship and top two teams from Plate Championship (including B Group entrants) were originally selected. The 2018 League (Cup) winners Royal College Colombo and 2018 Plate winner S. Thomas’ College opted out of the tournament and Wesley College and Maliyadeva College were invited to fill the vacant positions by the tournament organizers. The tournament will be hotly competed, as it has been in the past with defending Champions St. Joseph’s College under Sameesha Viranga will be eyeing to retain the Trophy back at Darley Road after coming close to secure their maiden League title this year. Josephians will have a stiff competition from Isipathana College who dominates the Schools Knockout Tournaments with 12 Championships followed by their younger brothers from Bambalapitiya St. Peter’s College who also lost out to elder brother Josephians narrowly in the League and also with that their League title hopes. In addition vastly improved Kingswood College, Wesley College and resurgent Trinity College with Imthi Marikkar taking over as Head Coach at Lion’s den will make the tournament more exciting and interesting. Also not to forget the Devans from Kurunegala, Maliyadeva won the Premier Trophy last year and will want to leave a mark behind with their maiden President’s Trophy appearance this year.

Though missing two powerhouses, Royal and S.Thomas’, this year’s tournament is not short of entertainment and excitement. All who are competing will compete with much eagerness, having had their second chance for glory will want to go the distance without being eliminated. Who will throw the knockout punch, rather punches and will remain unbeaten to lift the trophy on 30th June?
