Isipathana College, Colombo recorded a close 25 points (3 tries, 2 Conversions, 2 penalties) to 23 (2 tries, 2 conversions, 3 penalties) win over Vidyartha’ College, Kandy in their Inter-Schools Rugby League encounter played at Nittawela, in Kandy on Friday (29th) after leading 17-10 at the breather.
It was Isipathana’s place kicker M. Botheju who opened the scoring through a penalty kick 35 metres out to go into a 3-0 lead.
Minutes later, Vidyartha grabbed the lead to 7-3 when hooker S. Premarathne touched down for a try off a rolling maul which was converted by Menuka Thilakarathne.
Vidyartha extended the lead to 13-3 through two penalties slotted in by Thilakarathne.
Pathana cut down the lead to 13-6 through another penalty out over by Boteju.
Immediately skipper Dahan Wickramaarachchi scored a try under the posts for Isipathana and Boteju fired across the conversion to equal the score to 13 all.
Just on the brink of half time, Vidyartha got another penalty and Thilakarathne fired across the penalty to grab the lead again to 16-13.
At half time, Vidyartha led Isipathana 16 points to 13.
After the breather, the Isipathana outfit, who dominated play through their hard working forwards, gave a terrific display to completely outplay their counterparts in the loose.
However, the Kandy School came storming into the game when their replacement prop B.Dharmasiri, managed to score the first try after lemons which was converted by Menuka Thilakarathne to go into a further lead of 23-13.
Then soon after, Pathana flyhalf N. Kavishka, cut back into a beautiful running angle as he pumped his way over the line for a super try. He himself made the conversion to cut down the lead to 20-23 in favour of Vidyartha.
Isipathana went in to 25-23 lead when Man of the Match, S.Wewalapanditha, scored a splendid try which they missed the conversion but gave Pathana a thrilling win in the end.
